The 30-second brief
5 points- 01A standard account charges through the spread alone; an ECN account passes on a raw spread and adds a commission per lot.
- 02Total cost is what matters: spread, commission and overnight financing, multiplied by how often you trade.
- 03ECN-style accounts may show depth of market. Standard accounts are simpler to cost before a trade.
- 04GIO4X’s own account conditions are published separately, as indicative figures, on the account types page.
- 05“ECN” is an industry label, not a standard. GIO4X has not yet published its order execution policy, so nothing here describes how GIO4X routes or fills orders. Its ECN commission is charged per side.

Choosing the right account type
One of the most important decisions a forex trader makes is selecting the right account type. The two primary models — ECN (Electronic Communication Network) and Standard accounts — have different structures that affect how your trading costs are charged and shown to you. Understanding these differences is essential to choosing the account that aligns with your trading style, strategy, and capital.
What is a standard account?
A Standard account, sometimes called a Classic or STP (Straight Through Processing) account, is the most common type offered by forex brokers. In this model, the broker acts as an intermediary, aggregating liquidity and offering you a fixed or variable spread. The spread is the difference between the bid and ask price, and it represents the broker's primary revenue source on these accounts.
These accounts are straightforward: the cost of trading is embedded in the spread, making it easy to calculate expenses before entering a trade.
Standard accounts are ideal for beginners and casual traders who prefer simplicity.
What is an ECN account?
In the industry, ECN stands for electronic communication network: a venue where orders from many participants, such as banks, other financial institutions and other traders, are matched with one another. An account sold as ECN is generally described as passing on a spread close to the one in that underlying market, instead of a spread set by the broker, with the cost of dealing charged separately as a commission per lot traded.
The label is not standardised. How orders are routed, who the counterparty to a trade is, and how quickly and at what price orders are filled differ from broker to broker. They are set out in a broker’s order execution policy, not by the name of an account.
That is the general meaning of the term, and it is not a description of GIO4X. GIO4X has not yet published an order execution policy, so nothing in this article should be read as a statement about how GIO4X routes or fills orders, or about who provides its prices. What GIO4X has and has not published is listed on the transparency page.
A commission quoted per lot also needs its basis: per side (charged once on opening and again on closing) or per round trip (charged once for both). GIO4X’s ECN commission is charged per side, so it is counted on opening and again on closing when a total cost is worked out.
Key differences compared
Spreads: Standard accounts have wider, all-inclusive spreads. ECN accounts are typically quoted with a narrower, raw spread plus a commission.
Total Cost: Neither structure is cheaper by definition. The comparison is a wider spread on one side against a raw spread plus commission on the other, multiplied by how often you trade, with the commission counted on both opening and closing where it is charged per side, as GIO4X’s is. The Cost Lab shows the arithmetic and leaves that multiplier for you to set.
Market Depth: ECN accounts may display Level 2 (Depth of Market) data, showing pending orders at different price levels. Whether it is shown, and what it covers, depends on the broker and the platform.
Minimum Deposit: ECN accounts typically require higher minimum deposits.
Which account is right for you?
Choose a Standard Account if: You are new to forex, trade less frequently, prefer simple cost structures, or have limited starting capital.
Choose an ECN Account if: You are an experienced trader, scalper, or algorithmic trader who wants a raw spread with the cost of dealing shown as a separate commission. The label alone does not promise tighter spreads or faster execution: those depend on a broker’s execution arrangements, which GIO4X has not yet published.
Revised 4 October 2026. The description of ECN accounts was rewritten as the general meaning of the term in the industry, separated from GIO4X, whose order execution policy is not yet published; statements that an ECN account is cheaper, or executes faster, were removed.
