Policy instrument: Seven-day reverse repo rate, with the Loan Prime Rate as the benchmark for lending
Mandate: Stability of the value of the currency, and through it economic growth.
How it works: The bank is not independent of the government: major decisions are taken under the State Council, and its Monetary Policy Committee, which meets quarterly, advises. It uses several instruments together, among them the rates on its lending to banks, the share of deposits banks must hold in reserve, and the reference rate it publishes each trading day for the yuan, around which the mainland market may trade within a band. The Loan Prime Rate is published monthly. There is no calendar of rate decisions comparable to those of the banks above; the bank publishes a quarterly China Monetary Policy Report.
