How it works: The Authority has no policy interest rate. It steers the Singapore dollar against a trade-weighted basket of currencies, inside a band whose slope, width and centre it can change; the basket and the band are not published. Interest rates in Singapore are therefore largely an outcome of rates abroad and of the expected path of the exchange rate. Decisions are announced in a Monetary Policy Statement on a published schedule, a few times a year, and explained in its Macroeconomic Review. The Authority is also Singapore’s financial regulator.
