Long before coins, contracts or candlestick charts, volcanic glass was travelling across ancient landscapes. The first chapter in our trading story begins with a sharp edge and a question of trust.
Part 1 of 15The History of Trading

Nobody recorded the first trade. No clerk wrote down the price. No witness signed a contract. Somewhere in the deep human past, an object changed hands, and the moment disappeared.
The evidence that survived is harder than a memory. It is volcanic glass.
Obsidian can fracture into an extraordinarily sharp edge. For people making stone tools, that made it valuable. Yet it forms only in particular geological settings. Find it far from those settings and a question follows: how did it get there?
That question takes the history of trading beyond the first coin, beyond the first city, and into a landscape without written records.
At Olorgesailie in Kenya, archaeologists found obsidian associated with tools roughly 300,000 years old. Some of the material came from sources up to about 90 kilometres away. Its chemistry lets researchers connect the stone to places distant from the sites where it was used. [1]
Those distances are evidence of movement. Exchange networks are a plausible and important explanation, although a stone cannot tell us every stage of its journey. It may have passed through several hands. We cannot identify a seller, a buyer or an agreed price.
That distinction makes the discovery more interesting. Archaeology gives us a fragment of a relationship, not a receipt. We can see that people obtained useful material from beyond their immediate surroundings. Exactly how they arranged that access remains partly hidden.
🔎 Did You Know? Obsidian's geological origin can be investigated through its chemical composition. The material carries evidence of where it came from even when the people who moved it left no written account.
Later examples make the movement of valuable objects easier to see. Seashell beads appear far inland. Obsidian from Anatolia spreads across the Near East. Amber from the Baltic reaches the Mediterranean.
These are different places and periods, not one continuous prehistoric trade route. Together, however, they reveal a recurring human habit: things travel because people attach value to them.
An object might be useful, beautiful, scarce or socially important. Its value need not be identical for everyone. A material plentiful near its source can become difficult to obtain elsewhere. Distance creates a problem, but it can also create a reason to exchange.
The same basic relationship is visible whenever two people value what the other holds more highly than what they are willing to give up. Trade does not require identical preferences. It often begins because preferences differ.
Picture a possible exchange between groups. One has access to desirable stone. Another can offer something useful in return. This is an illustration of the problem, not a recovered scene from Olorgesailie.
Before either side gives anything up, both face uncertainty. Will the other side cooperate? Is the material as useful as it looks? Will this encounter make another exchange possible later?
Repeated contact could help answer those questions. So could relationships and shared expectations. We should not assume every early exchange happened between hostile strangers. The people involved may have known one another well.
Whatever its form, exchange needed some way to make cooperation worthwhile. The object was only one part of the transaction. Expectations about people mattered too.
🧭 Why This Matters to Traders: A quoted price is only part of a market. The ability to verify what is being exchanged and trust that the exchange will be completed matters just as much.
It would be a mistake to turn prehistoric people into modern speculators wearing animal skins. Their circumstances were different, and their motives are not fully recoverable.
The useful connection is simpler. Markets depend on access, perceived value and workable relationships. Technology changes how those relationships are organised. It does not make them unnecessary.
An order book can look impersonal because the people behind it are invisible. Yet the system still relies on agreements about ownership, delivery and payment. Beneath the screen are human commitments, now supported by institutions and rules.
🎯 Trader Takeaway: Before asking whether a price looks attractive, ask what gives the asset value and what makes the exchange reliable. Those questions are older than money.
We may never find the first trade. We have already found enough to know that the urge to reach beyond what was immediately available runs deep in human history.
The first chapter of the market was written without words. A sharp piece of stone carried the story.
